16mm fisheye for approx 45 seconds at f2.8
I stayed on in the hope that activity might increase and a few minutes later it did just that. Suddenly the whole northern horizon was filled with an auroral curtain, with numerous rays (where the curtain folds back on itself in the line of sight) appearing and disappearing quickly. It extended 90 degrees around the horizon although only around 30 degrees high. To my eye there was very little colour, except perhaps a faint green cast. In the photos the colours look much more impressive. Unfortunately this burst of activity only lasted a few minutes, before slowly fading away again, leaving the odd random ray to appear and disappear again for the next hour. Eventually, it seemed that activity had finished completely and I made the walk back to bed.
